Laudato Si’ Project: Recycling Pens

At the end of the academic year, I went on a residential with 'The Outward Bound Trust', an organisation which teaches young people communication and teamwork skills in the beauty of the outdoors. One thing I loved was how students would spot litter on the floor and pick it up, even when it was left by stranger.

I have also seen this eco-culture develop in schools, where students pick up litter left by other students. I thought I could also promote these small acts of kindness with a box where students can recycle their used pens and highlighters. It's a small step, but it also brings Laudato Si’ into the classroom in a practical way. Pope Francis describes the Earth as “our common home.” Hopefully, recycling something as simple as an old pen can remind students that caring for our common home starts with the small choices we make every day.

This reminds me of St Thérèse of Lisieux and her “Little Way.” Her little way to becoming a saint was not about doing huge or extraordinary things, but doing small things with great love. Whether that is doing the dishes, calling a grandparent, helping someone, or picking up a Mars Bar wrapper, these small acts of love reflect the love of Christ.
